Experiential Learning
Study Abroad
Study abroad options include the department's own summer program in La Rochelle, France, and internships in Francophone areas such as Senegal. Students are encouraged to consider our semester or year-long programs: in France via the MICEFA exchange (Paris) and the Université de Haute Bretagne (CIEE-Rennes), and in Québec, at McGill University (Montréal). Students who elect semester or year-long study at our partner institutions and programs frequently combine their study of French with coursework in other disciplines, such as history, political science and other popular second majors. Robins School students may pursue pre-professional training in French at a number of highly-rated schools such as Paris IX Dauphine and the Institut de Formation Internationale in Rouen.
For information on study abroad, contact the Office of International Education. For specific information on programs in France, contact Dr. Sara Pappas or Dr. Francoise Ravaux-Kirkpatrick.
Internships
French majors may apply for internships with the VCU French Film Festival, held each spring at Richmond's Byrd Theater. Interns receive independent study credit and assist with planning, promoting and organizing the film festival. All work at the festival office is conducted in French.
Contact Dr. Francoise Ravaux-Kirkpatrick if you would like to apply for an internship.
Teaching assistantships in France are available through the French Ministry of Education. A number of Richmond students have taken advantage of this program after graduating with degrees in French. For more information, contact the French Embassy in the United States.
